We’ve fully embraced the joyful energy of spring! With longer days, blooming flowers, and curious creatures stirring all around us, our theme has transformed into a celebration of the season and the children are loving every moment of it.
Welcome to Our Spring Flower Shop!
Our play kitchen has taken on a cheerful new identity as a Spring Flower Shop! The children have been busy arranging bouquets, “selling” blooms to their friends, and exploring the colors, and textures, of the season. This kind of pretend play sparks creativity, builds language skills, and encourages cooperation.
Sensory Fun & Playdough Magic
In our sensory bin, little hands have been busy “planting” a variety of spring flowers complete with some friendly pollinators like bees and butterflies tucked in. We also made a fresh batch of spring playdough together as a group, adding calming seasonal colors and scents to enhance the sensory experience and build those fine motor muscles.
Springtime Art & Learning Through Play
We’ve been busy painting beautiful spring flowers, exploring the shapes and colors of petals, stems, and leaves. At circle time, our letter recognition game got a seasonal update with new spring flowers, helping children connect letters to their names and sounds. We continue working on name recognition through songs and playful activities, including a fun letter hunt on our morning walks.
Math & Movement Moments
Spring is bringing numbers to life! We’ve been buzzing along with “10 Little Bumblebees” to the tune of 10 Little Indians, and Here is the Beehive https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=V5Bs9xydba0&pp=0gcJCfcAhR29_xXO
blending counting and music in a way that keeps everyone engaged. We also did a colorful flower-themed matching activity that helped reinforce early color recognition and visual discrimination skills all while having fun.
Story time in Bloom
Our spring book collection has been a hit! Here’s what we’ve been reading:
• Goodbye Winter, Hello Spring by Kenard Pak – A beautiful seasonal transition story, as a child and his dog walk through their town and notice the subtle shifts from winter to spring.
• Grumpy Monkey: Spring Fever by Suzanne Lang – Jim Panzee is feeling all kinds of things as spring arrives. This playful story explores emotional awareness and how even happy changes can feel overwhelming.
• When Will It Be Spring? by Catherine Walters – A sweet story about a little bear named Alfie who’s eager for spring to arrive, filled with curiosity and patience-building.
• Baby Bear Sees Blue by Ashley Wolff – A gentle, vibrant exploration of colors in nature as Baby Bear takes in the world around him with fresh eyes.
New Slumberkins Friend: Meet Hammerhead!
This week, we said a loving goodbye (for now) to Bigfoot and welcomed a new Slumberkin friend, Hammerhead! Hammerheads story teaches children all about conflict resolution, helping them learn how to navigate big emotions and find peaceful solutions when things get tricky with friends. We’ve already had meaningful conversations about feelings and practicing kindness.
We also gave a brief introduction to Narwhal, who makes an appearance in the Hammerhead story. Narwhal helps children understand growth mindset, learning that it’s okay to make mistakes and that we can always keep trying. The children are excited to get to know Narwhal better in the coming weeks!
We’ll be keeping our spring theme blooming for a few more weeks, continuing to explore flowers, colors, and all the joyful signs of the season. As April approaches, we’ll begin to sprinkle in some Easter fun with playful bunnies, colorful eggs, and festive surprises. We’ll also be learning about Earth Day, talking about how we can take care of our planet through simple, hands-on activities that help our little ones grow a love for nature and the world around them.
Warmly,
Ms Sarah
May the world be filled with beautiful, peaceful little children.
