We’ve been having a magically fun time at Little Squirrels, diving into all things leprechauns, rainbows, and spring! Here’s a peek at what we’ve been up to:
Sensory Bin Magic
This week, we introduced a brand new sensory bin that’s been a huge hit! It’s filled with rainbow rice and noodles, gold leprechaun coins, and a special treasure chest for little hands to discover. The children have been scooping, pouring, and hunting for gold, all while building fine motor skills and engaging their senses. I’m happy to say they are also getting much better about keeping this contained to the sensory bin.
Circle Time Highlights
We’ve been enjoying some festive and fun leprechaun-themed books during circle time:
How to Catch a Leprechaun by Adam Wallace
A playful, rhyming story about the tricky ways leprechauns avoid being caught. The kids loved brainstorming their own clever traps!

Leprechaun on the Loose by Marcia Thornton Jones
This silly classroom story had everyone giggling as a mischievous leprechaun causes chaos at school.

The Story of the Leprechaun by Katherine Tegen
A beautifully illustrated tale that shares the origins of the leprechaun legend, complete with rainbows and pots of gold.

I introduced new alphabet shamrocks, taking turns finding their letter and hanging it up. I also introduced name recognition this week. I made each child a name tag with their picture on it, and they took turns picking out their name tag, and then we sang a song for each name that spells out the letters of their name. Usually to the tune of BINGO or Mickey Mouse depending on the length. We will continue to work on this this regularly at circle time. I didn’t take pictures because I didn’t want the children’s names on the blog.
Leprechaun Songs & Props
Circle time got even more exciting with:
• “10 Little Leprechauns” song – a fun counting song to the tune of “10 Little Indians.”
• “5 Little Leprechauns” – paired with adorable leprechaun props the children could hold and use to count down together!
Math Fun: Counting Gold Coins
We practiced counting and number recognition by using our gold leprechaun coins! Each child had a turn counting out different amounts of coins and matching them to the correct numeral. Hands-on math fun!
Snack Time Science
Snack time turned into a mini science lab! We watched Skittles create rainbow patterns when placed in water – such a fun, simple experiment. Of course, the kids also enjoyed tasting a few Skittles afterward (because science is sweet sometimes!).
Meet our new Slumberkins, Bigfoot!
This week we welcomed Bigfoot!
Bigfoot helps us learn all about self-esteem and self-confidence. During our circle time, we talked about the ways we are strong, unique, and loved – just like Bigfoot teaches. I don’t know why most of them coincidentally had their eyes closed for the pictures. Must be my photography skills were lacking that day.
Outdoor Adventures
Best of all, the warmer weather has returned! We’ve been able to enjoy:
• Long morning walks, listening to birds chirping
• Afternoon playtime outside, soaking in the sunshine
• Watching for squirrels and spotting signs of spring together
We talked about the changing seasons, how winter is coming to an end, and the exciting transition into springtime. It feels so good to be outside exploring nature in the warm sunshine instead of cold again! It is also spectacular that we don’t have to get so many layers on to go
We can’t wait to see what the rest of the month brings! More Leprechauns and rainbows next week, and hopefully more sunshine!
Warmly,
Ms Sarah
May the world be filled with beautiful, peaceful little children.
