At Little Squirrels, we don’t just follow a curriculum, we follow the seasons.
We pay attention to what’s happening right outside our door. The melting snow, the longer days, the first signs of green pushing through the soil. Children are naturally curious about these changes, and we believe learning should reflect that.
As winter fades and spring begins to bloom, we shift our focus to one of the most beautiful and meaningful signs of the season… flowers.
🌿 Learning Through the Seasons
Our approach is rooted in connection, to nature, to the environment, and to the children in our care.
Instead of disconnected themes, we build our learning experiences around what children can see, touch, and experience in real life. When they notice buds forming or talk about flowers growing, we follow that interest and turn it into something deeper.
That’s how this Flower Shop Unit was created.
🌸 A Natural Transition Into Spring
This unit is all about helping children gently transition into spring through play, exploration, and hands-on learning.
We transform our dramatic play area into a flower shop where children:
Create bouquets
Take orders
Care for flowers
Engage in meaningful role play
But it doesn’t stop there.
This unit weaves together:
Early literacy through alphabet flowers and name recognition
Math skills like counting, patterns, and sorting
Science exploration with parts of a flower and real observations
Art and creativity through open-ended flower projects
All connected to what they’re naturally experiencing in the world around them.
🌼 Why It Works
When children learn through real-life connections, it sticks.
They’re not just counting, they’re counting flowers they arranged.
They’re not just learning letters, they’re finding their name in something meaningful.
They’re not just playing, they’re making sense of the world.
This is the kind of learning we strive for every day in our daycare.
🌷 Simple, Intentional, and Beautiful
As a provider, I know how busy days can be. That’s why this unit was created to be simple to set up, but rich in learning.
You can keep it minimal or expand it as your space and time allow. Either way, it creates an inviting, seasonal environment that children are drawn to.
🌿 Bring It Into Your Classroom or Home
